About

Gunnison River, Colorado — 1901 Reclamation Service, 1966 Crystal Dam, Aspinall Unit, Curecanti NRA. Gold Medal trout waters flow through the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area at an average 1,850 CFS, with optimal paddling between 800–3,500 CFS on gauge 09144250. The Gunnison Gorge section from Chukar to Pleasure Park runs 14 miles of Class II–III water through protected canyon walls — a multi-day classic managed by the BLM since the NCA designation in 1999. Below Pleasure Park, the river picks up the North Fork confluence and mellows to Class I–II water through Delta, then continues as Class I through Mesa County to its confluence with the Colorado at Grand Junction. RIGS Adventure Company operates commercial trips through the gorge section. The 180-mile main stem carries snowmelt from the high Rockies, making spring and early summer the prime season for both the whitewater and the trophy trout fishing that earned it Gold Medal status.
