About

Frying Pan River, Colorado — 1968 Ruedi Dam, Gold Medal Trout. Colorado Gold Medal waters below Ruedi Dam support trophy trout on a diet of mysis shrimp — tiny crustaceans that pass through the dam and fuel exceptional growth rates established in the 1990s. The Fryingpan runs 42 miles through Pitkin County within White River National Forest, averaging 340 CFS with optimal flows between 200–800. The Toilet Bowl section from Ruedi Dam to Baetis Bridge covers three miles of cold tailwater where the largest fish hold. Below that, the middle Fryingpan from Baetis Bridge to Basalt stretches 10 miles of Gold Medal designation through Class I-II water. The lower river continues from Basalt to its confluence with the Roaring Fork. Before European contact, this was Ute homeland throughout the Roaring Fork Valley. Taylor Creek Fly Shop guides the water, and anglers monitor USGS gauge 09080400 for optimal conditions. The mysis shrimp introduction transformed what was once modest trout water into some of Colorado's most productive tailwater fishery.
