Colorado Gold Medal Trout Water · White River National Forest

About

Blue River, Colorado — 1880s Mining Era, Dillon 1963, Green Mountain 1943, I-70 Corridor. Gold Medal waters below Dillon Dam support trophy trout populations that earned the Blue River its designation in 1998. This 65-mile White River National Forest drainage flows north through Summit County at 450 CFS average, with optimal flows between 200-1500 CFS. The Ute established summer camps throughout the Blue River Valley before European contact. Above Dillon Reservoir, the mountain headwaters from Breckenridge run Class I-II through high country meadows. The tailwater section below Dillon Dam to Green Mountain Reservoir maintains the cold, consistent flows that created the Gold Medal fishery. Below Green Mountain Reservoir, the river enters a canyon run with Class II-III rapids before joining the Colorado River. Breckenridge Outfitters guides the upper sections. USGS gauge 09046600 tracks conditions for both anglers and paddlers working this drainage.
