About
Mokelumne River and the 1848 Gold Discovery. The gauge tells the working story first. USGS station 11319500 records an average flow near 900 cubic feet per second, with a historical figure of about 820 CFS, and boaters look for the 500–2,000 CFS window that makes the whitewater run. Within that range the river offers distinct experiences depending on where a paddler puts in. The Electra Run — five miles of Class III–IV — is the most popular section. The North Fork holds a Class IV–V expert wilderness run, while below Camanche Dam the water flattens to Class I–II, better suited to flatwater fishing than to a raft.
The watershed itself spreads wide. Rising in the central Sierra Nevada, the Mokelumne runs 95 miles and drains a basin of 2,143 square miles spread across five California counties. Before contact, that canyon was Northern Sierra Miwok homeland, and the river's salmon runs sustained communities in the foothill villages for thousands of years. The name that survives — Mokelumne, "people of the fish net" — carries that history forward, anchored in the Plains Miwok language and the Indigenous communities who lived along the banks.
The 1848 gold discovery at Mokelumne Hill changed the corridor abruptly, setting off waves of placer and hard-rock mining and triggering the Calaveras and Amador mining districts. Timber followed the miners. From the 1830s through the 1920s, the watershed was logged to support the regional timber industry of the 1850s–1910s and the railroad expansion of the 1860s–1910s, worked by local sawmills, logging drives, and downstream lumber operations. Large-scale logging ended with the exhaustion of old-growth stands around 1910, the start of state forestry conservation in 1915, and the establishment of state forests in the 1930s.
The river's hydrology drew scientific attention early. USGS surveys of the 1870s–1890s, gauging-station work of the 1880s–1910s, and state geological streamflow assessments of the 1910s–1930s were the first comprehensive hydrological studies of the basin. Later state water-pollution-control studies of the 1950s–1970s and Clean Water Act assessments from 1972 through 2000 addressed more than a century of logging, agricultural, and industrial impacts. Infrastructure arrived alongside the science: the 1929 Pardee Dam created Camanche Reservoir, the Mokelumne's largest reservoir, and the East Bay Municipal Utility District system now supplies drinking water to 1.4 million people in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Recreation and protection have moved to the foreground in recent years. In 2018, EBMUD agreed to improved recreational flow releases below Pardee Dam, benefiting both whitewater recreation and salmon habitat in the lower river and balancing water supply against environmental and recreational values. That same year the Mokelumne was added to the California Wild and Scenic River System, protecting its free-flowing character and outstanding natural values; the North Fork also carries National Wild & Scenic River status within Eldorado National Forest, and its 1,000-foot canyon is a Registered California Historical Landmark. Downstream, EBMUD manages the Mokelumne River Day Use Area, where visitors picnic, fish, and wade in the shallows — a river once defined by gold kept rooted in everyday Californian life.
