USGS gauge 07050500 tracks the river, which averages roughly 520 cubic feet per second, and paddlers find the best water in a window of about 200 to 2,000 CFS. Within that range the character shifts dramatically from reach to reach. The uppermost run from Boston to Trigger Gap covers about 20 miles of Class II–III water, the river's best whitewater. Below that, Trigger Gap to Marshall Ford stretches 30 miles of Class I–II through a scenic canyon, and the final 40 miles from Marshall Ford to Berryville ease into Class I as the valley widens. Across the whole system the difficulty holds within a Class I–III span.

The watershed carries a long human history. Before European contact, the Kings River valley was Osage hunting territory; the river's clear, spring-fed tributaries and remote valleys sustained game the Osage relied upon for centuries. The 1700s through the 1830s saw extensive Osage and Cherokee habitation, and the 1840s brought Euro-American settlement to the valley. From the 1830s through the 1920s, the watershed was logged to feed the regional timber industry and railroad expansion. Local sawmills and logging drives worked the Kings' white oak, hickory, and shortleaf pine, with the heaviest cutting falling between 1880 and 1940. The exhaustion of the old-growth stands around 1910, the start of state forestry conservation in 1915, and the establishment of state forests in the 1930s brought the large-scale logging era to a close.

Conservation gathered momentum from there. After the 1971 Madison County statute, the state established the Kings River Falls Natural Area in 1979, where a two-mile hiking trail winds through hardwood bottoms to a waterfall some six feet high, its broad ledge tumbling into a clear pool below. The natural area sits in Madison County at the boundary of the Ozark National Forest. In 1972, the neighboring Buffalo National River was established — legislation Senator McClellan first introduced in 1967, with the final park bill introduced in 1971. In 1987, Arkansas designated the Kings a Natural State Scenic River, recognizing its water quality, scenic beauty, and standing as one of the last undammed rivers in the Ozark Highlands. The 1980s brought designation of river segments as a State Natural and Scenic Riverway. The state also named the Kings an Extraordinary Resource Waterbody, a status that restricts streambed alterations and development across the basin.

The river's story reaches into the present. Between 2010 and 2024, Kings Conservation efforts protected 80 percent of the watershed from development, and a Kings River Restoration effort stands as one of the largest dam-removal and river-restoration projects in Arkansas history. Hydrological study of the river runs back further still — USGS surveys in the 1870s, gauging stations from the 1880s onward, and later Clean Water Act assessments beginning in 1972 addressed more than a century of logging, agricultural, and industrial impacts.

Today the Kings is a premier smallmouth bass and rainbow trout fishery and one of the principal rivers of the Boston Mountains. Its combination of steady flow, clear water, and formal protection is exactly what has kept it on the maps of paddlers and anglers who understand how unusual an unbroken Ozark river has become.
