About

Through Graham County's Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area, 23 miles of the Gila River cut through deep canyon walls with Class II-III rapids and natural hot springs. The BLM-managed corridor protects one of Arizona's few remaining perennial desert rivers, averaging 550 CFS with an optimal range of 300–2000. The upper box section provides Class II water as the canyon deepens; the middle box delivers the most technical Class II-III drops alongside the deepest canyon walls and accessible hot springs; the lower section to Bonita Creek eases back to Class II as the walls spread wider. Gila Box Outfitters runs commercial trips through the conservation area. USGS gauge 09448500 tracks flows that can swing dramatically with monsoon rains and snowmelt from the headwaters, making timing critical for both navigability and camping on the limited shoreline.
